New information suggests that this was not an epending job, but rather the Dean-For-Texas campaign was supplied with a bad list. This emphasizes what most in the anti-spam community have known for some time, which is that lists obtained from outside are generally highly suspect.

This apology seems reasonably sincere, and it has been pointed out to me that the apology comes from a non-techie who probably doesn't understand the nuances that the anti-spam geek community is after. I think we have to take this as being a fairly decent response, and hope they stick with opt-in from here on out.
